Well, a chemical called hydrogen peroxide is the key to that. It’s a colorless, odorless solution that is soluble in water (and therefore a good solvent for extracting hydrogen peroxide from water). If the concentration on the outside of the flask is around 50%, then we want to add the hydrogen peroxide a little bit into the water and let it get mixed with the water. So what I do is use some distilled water to dilute a little bit of it. Then, after the mixture gets heated to just underneath boiling point, I add a little bit of potassium acetate, just enough to dissolve it and make you have a nice, thick purple solution. Now I take my flask off of the heat and I’m going to add it back to the heat flask. I have this little stainless steel spouted flask and I pour some distilled water into that. I’ve got what you would like to see: It looks like water.
And on the bottom of the flask I’ve got this little tube that’s supposed to have the temperature monitoring set up. But it doesn’t, but I’ve set the alarm to go off when it’s boiling.
Alright, the first test with the water I used just a drop per drop, and I know the hydrogen peroxide has gone off fairly quickly, so I just leave it out there for 30 minutes and check and make sure. If it’s still there, I would add a drop with more sodium fluoride peroxide. It’s not a very good solution, so I just wait. But, the fact that I have the detector still on here also just shows that this process doesn’t happen as quickly as you expect.
When I’m finished here, I take the flask off of the heat and I’m going to go to the next step and then I’m going to put the flask back on the heat and see if anything happens. This is a really good demonstration of why it’s important to keep the detector on. When I get back into the water flow, I’m going to pull the temperature reading I showed on the other side and I’m going to look here: How many degrees Celsius are we talking about here? At first it’s about 0.1, but then eventually this kind of thing will actually happen. I’ll take this temperature reading and I’ll flip the detector so that it reads 0 degrees. Okay, that’s a nice temperature reading I got there, and now I need to put in something that’s going to convert that. Right now
