That’s a question that has been debated for a while now, and it’s clear that no matter what the answer, the problem will not be solved by just installing solar.
The big problem with solar is that it’s a very expensive way of producing electricity, as well as putting a huge strain on our resources to produce electricity — a fact that’s illustrated with the following graph:
The only way to increase the production of energy from solar is to develop cheap storage, and this is a much harder problem to solve as solar’s output can’t be directly increased by adding more storage to a system, but it does need to be improved. This is not a new problem to the oil industry and the cost of storage has been around for ages. As more and more solar panels are installed, it’s only a matter of time before the cost of storage falls to zero, creating the ability to power the rest of the world with clean energy.
With that in mind, this is what I plan on doing, so I can have a little fun with solar.
What are the steps that I plan on taking to generate enough power from solar to power me for a month?
First, I plan to install a little bit of back-up battery storage. Currently, the power of the solar panels themselves depends on how much sunlight they receive, but with the batteries I plan on using the Sun’s energy to make me charge my laptop in the morning. Then at night, I plan to have my solar array run away until the battery is empty, at which point it would recharge my laptop. The system would require about 20 hours of storage to fully work out.
Next, I will start running it through my computer. I will try to avoid using the whole capacity as it will consume most of the power, but I may have to do that some day. I would need to charge my laptop for 30 minutes or less each day, and use 20% of that for charging batteries.
And, finally, I plan on running the generator on its own for as much power as it can get. As the energy output of my solar system is less than my own battery storage — which is about 1%, I will run it off my laptop for as much power as it can get over a 12 hour day — and as long as I don’t use my computer, I’m using it to generate enough energy to run it on its own.
