LONDON (Reuters) – The world’s biggest solar panel maker Sharp Corp will buy British-based solar energy specialist EDF Energy Plc, becoming a major beneficiary of Britain’s push to reduce its reliance on nuclear power.

Britain could be forced to close its nuclear power plants by 2017 to cut its reliance on expensive fossil fuels after talks between Britain and China broke down, analysts said today. Britain would also become the largest importer of solar panels in the world by 2018, an annual report issued by Sharp, said earlier on Monday.
“The UK is a great location for the company,” Andrew Green, president and chief executive, said after Sharp bought EDF from European rivals Eon.
“We look forward to working with EDF and its suppliers and helping the company become the largest photovoltaic power equipment maker in the company’s history,” Green said.
Eon is a leading producer of solar panels in Europe.
In a joint statement, a spokeswoman for Eon and Sharp said their deal would bring together two companies in a globally competitive market, adding that their “longstanding mutual objectives will continue to be fully met.”
