MUMBAI: As the government seeks to implement the ‘Mangal’ policy on climate change , the country’s biggest and most populous state Odisha has decided to set aside 10% of its power supply to the national grid by 2020.If the Centre’s ‘Mangal’ targets are met, Odisha could supply 40% of its total power to the grid by 2020.A joint proposal is on the table in Odisha for setting up a multi-purpose power transmission system for the state. This transmission system is needed to handle coal-fired power plants in the state which are not yet equipped to handle the renewable energy mix required by the scheme. As of November, the state’s power-supply system is more than 30% coal and only about 10% of renewable energy is being met.The state, which has huge oil reserves, is also keen on diversifying its energy generation mix to meet India’s climate change goals. The state, which has 1% of its electricity coming from nuclear power plants, is one of the seven states that have received international awards for being most climate-friendly.A joint team of the state’s power distribution ministry, the Electricity Department and the NGT have been working to develop a comprehensive energy strategy with the backing of the Indian Energy and Coal Ministry. The group has proposed to set up a power transmission and distribution network across Odisha with two branches in Nadia and Jharkhand. The proposal would require the approval of the energy minister. Odisha is a key state in the power distribution system in the country.According to a ministry of power spokesperson, the plan involves the establishment of the first phase of the “Mangal” scheme for renewable energy, a move that’s expected to help curb the country’s carbon emissions.
