A woman who suffered a stroke after being struck in the head by a car in a drunk-driving crash has a new diagnosis – diabetes.

Carol Foulke, 40, underwent surgery for a partially collapsed larynx following the Oct. 9, 2013 accident when she was driving north on I-94 in Virginia before the vehicle struck a tree. Police said she crashed into the windshield and left the road before she was able to walk the two miles back to her house.

Foulke was in satisfactory condition at Lee Memorial Hospital in Bethesda, Virginia, Wednesday; she was discharged Friday morning. She has since regained speech and is back at work, her attorney, Joseph Lauer, told FOX 5.

In 2013, Foulke was convicted of drunken driving and convicted on two counts of third-offense driving while impaired.

She lost her hearing in her left ear after the wreck, which resulted in a head injury and a partially collapsed larynx that required surgery. She lost her ability to breathe on the right side of her face and her arm and hand were severed when she received the larynx laceration. She was diagnosed with diabetes.

An MRI revealed no structural damage to her chest, but a CT scan revealed her larynx was partially collapsed.

The larynxes are the two large lobes in the throat that form the upper lip, and it is a common finding in people who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Dr. David Dyer, assistant professor of medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, told ABC News.
