Yes. There’s a lot of different ways to play piano. But many more beginners have problems with picking up and playing piano than with any other instrument. The best thing you can do is start practicing. In the beginning, if you’re still a beginner, you can start by playing a few songs.
Once you’re getting better and better, then you get more advanced at trying to figure out the best way to play something – for example, picking up notes while standing up (known as “kabaret”).
Then you start playing other songs. Then you learn more songs and start playing other songs. Eventually, you get good enough that you can learn all the music that is out there – for example, you can learn the Beatles or Rolling Stones through that. And then you can start learning music from all over the world – the Beatles, French music, and so on, so that you can learn music in a wide variety of genres.
How can we prevent beginners from making terrible mistakes?
The most important thing you can do is stop thinking it’s the end of the world if you make a mistake (unless you’re a really, really bad pianist). If you’re always thinking, “I just made that horrible mistake”; you’re never going to pick up something good.
Do not ever listen to other players playing your piece. They need to feel the pressure when you’re holding the keys. There are so many different ways to play, you don’t need someone else’s view to convince you about what the best way to play is.
If you’ve ever read a textbook, or seen people talking on the piano, that tells you how to play, listen to them! If they know their music, they really do know it.
I want to say thank you to Mr. O’Neill. He’s the man behind PianoSticks.co.uk who has been helping so many of us get out of our comfort zones and into better playing. Thank you!
Also, if you have any questions you’d like to ask, we’d love to hear them. You can contact the pianist here.
To give this a bit of love. I’ve found that after reading the articles on this site, I’m much less likely to do the same errors and mistakes again!
