You have to be really in touch with this. You’re not gonna get it by learning a bunch of songs that are on YouTube. There are very often things that you do that are wrong or are not going to be a good match for them. If you go out in a band, you’re just a kid, and you have your guitar, you have your vocal, and you’re playing along, this is your job. I’ve got a bunch of the same records that I’ve done for two decades. I’ve got all that stuff that they’ve done. I’m not gonna use that in my performance if you don’t have a good way of listening to the records.
It’s not too much of a chore, but it’s not a great listening thing to do as a musician. You have to find the place where it’s gonna work with your whole body. You have the body of a musician, yet you have to learn to listen in a different way.
I’m always thinking about what I want to do now. I’m trying not to be too obsessed with music, especially after the last eight weeks. And I’m trying to find that place of listening, which is the best place to listen in different ways. It’s gotta feel good and you got to enjoy it.
What kind of music are you listening to right now?
Right now it would be the music I’m working on now. That’s a very good place to start with.
I know you played in the Grateful Dead for a while, and there’s an entire record that’s called Lost Weekend. Is that the one that went to #16 on the Billboard Hot 100?
No. [laughs] Yes, in my opinion that was the best album of ’78, and I had played with ’em so a lot of times. I was playing with a lot of different players. There were five or six different instrumentalists. It was pretty crazy when I got it out of there.

Do you have a favorite song on that record, or does it have a lot of good tracks on it?
If you say you like it, I’ll say it. If you say you don’t like it, I’ll tell you that you don’t like your music. It’s just how I feel. There’s things that are good to me. There are things that might be good to you, because maybe
