We can use this question to explore the relation between learning, language acquisition, and creativity.”
The researchers found that singers who sing in both natural and learned styles may have similar cognitive capacities and have learned and/or developed the skills of singing without explicit instruction. They say it is not clear whether singers in natural style have gained proficiency over the years, or in the first place; if both are true they could explain some of the apparent creativity in singers.
The researchers also explored whether singers in both types of singing style would have learned from other singers.
They conclude that singers in natural style will likely learn better than their non-singing peers via other singers’ performances. But in doing so they may neglect the skills learned through their own singing, which may contribute to the apparent creativity of a singer who can learn in both natural and learned styles.
According to the authors, “This result provides a plausible explanation for the apparent complexity of vocal abilities… although more research is needed to resolve the nature of this relationship between singing and creative talent.”
