I don’t mean practise every day, just when your not practicing guitar or drum and when you’ve been working on playing guitar or drum in the gym for a while. You don’t have to practice every day, though, I can’t stress enough how important it is to practice frequently.
Practice all of the following:
Playing with uke
Playing a solo or a medley of other players’ playing (I have a separate section for this; see below the tabs for more information.)
Working on playing harmony, rhythm, and melody.
I’ll break this up into 3 easy ones.
If you work on these, and you know that you’re in a band playing with other music-making people, take your time and get a good sense of your range and your playing. You will probably come across as a guitarist who’s a little behind the rest of your band mates on most things, but if you’re diligent and you’re playing a lot, then the players around you will learn how to work with your range and you’ll get a better feel for how you can get the most out of it and, eventually, even become an excellent playing guitarist.
For instance, if you’re really good at jazz and playing scales on the guitar, but still don’t have much range on the uke-you may find that the better players around you will take that and add to it by playing jazz on the uke, and you’ll start hearing a little bit of it in your playing.
So there you have it!
Myths about ukulele technique are generally true in that they’re not true. That said, a lot of people seem to think that, just to be an excellent ukulele player, you need to practice it every day and you need to learn how to use it every day. There are lots of different ways of developing your uke range, and you’re not going to be able to just play over the chord sequences. You’re not going to be able to use your ukulele in a jazz context so you’ll want to work on that too, and then to be an excellent ukulele player, you need to know how to do all those things, you need to keep working on it and improving. Sometimes, you’ll find that practicing three instruments at the same time just isn’t going to cut it. There are other ways of developing your range,
