In the mid-1990s, many people were excited about the prospect that a new television technology would take the place of the venerable VCR. But that technology would never deliver that promised TV viewing experience.
By 2003 and 2004, most people had moved on from the traditional cable-TV set and on to the Internet.
Then, as now, cable companies did not offer many new TV channels for cable subscribers. Many cable channels were slow to start, as they needed to be developed, tested and eventually launched.
The result was that many people had a hard time discovering new channels. The industry’s top broadcasters and networks have a wealth of content that could have led to lots of new channels.
But they simply lacked enough network content to take advantage of it.
“There are people in this country who have a hatred for this nation, a hatred to the American way of life and to everybody that has been here the past 14 years,” said Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, who spoke to reporters at the Capitol. “And you can see on social media, on the Internet—there is a huge hatred for us.”
The hate has resulted in at least one violent riot and at least two cases of vandalism.
In the most recent incident in Oakland, an 81-year-old woman was stabbed when someone broke into her apartment, said police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andrist.
In another attack, an SUV that was parked outside Rep. Rosa DeLauro’s office was broken into and spray-painted “Nazi f—–s go home,” said her spokesman.
Ms. DeLauro and Mr. DeLuardo said last week that they saw no anti-Semitic attack as of Sunday.
But when Ms. Lee took a stroll around the Capitol, she saw a small group of protesters, many of them dressed in black and bearing signs. As her group of members passed the group and waved their signs and began talking to them, the group turned and started walking away, Ms. Lee said.
In response, several members from the group turned around and ran, said her Republican friend and former congressman Bill Huizenga.
