A new bill will allow New Jerseyans to carry concealed guns into some of the state’s more than 700 strip clubs.
Senate Bill 816 passed the Senate and is now headed to the Assembly for consideration.
Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson) said it’s a small step for the Legislature to take in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings that left 26 dead.
“This is a very important legislation that will provide the victims of this horrific crime with more protection from gun violence, and we have to do something big in terms of this particular bill with New Jersey to really make New Jersey a safer place to be,” Prieto said.
Under the bill a licensee must ask his or her adult business guest to get a license before serving alcohol but no one is required to do so.
The bill would not affect a “licensed establishment” which is defined as a business that has a liquor license and does not already have an alcohol license. The bill also exempts clubs whose liquor license has expired while a new license is issued.
Gun-rights supporters see this as a victory.
“There really isn’t anything wrong with anything, this bill in fact does a whole host of things for the common good,” said State Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Union), a gun-control advocate who sponsored the bill.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Union), said New Jerseyans should have a second chance to carry a concealed gun after President Obama’s ban on assault rifles was overturned in a district court ruling in June.
Under current law, a licensed firearms instructor can not provide gun classes to gun owners.
Lesniak said he had been working on the bill since the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, but it was stalled after a judge ruled the ban was unconstitutional in April. He said it will take six to eight months to write the new regulation.
The bill would take effect July 1 and no one will be able to teach
