Travelers Who Have Blood Gland Infections

Travelers traveling to Mexico to receive treatment for blood or other organ failure that could lead to blood clots should have regular check-ups. There are many medications that can be used to treat patients with blood clots or organ failure. If the patient does not meet the medical criteria and is unlikely to recover as quickly as expected, he or she should be admitted to a hospital immediately. If the patient does meet the criteria, and can travel safely, medical assistance should be sought.

If the patient has been prescribed an extended-release blood thinner such as warfarin, aspirin or a diuretic (water pills), a transfusion of the blood is highly likely. For cases where the patient needs longer-term transfusion therapy such as blood products or transplantation, the patient should be admitted to a hospital for treatment as quickly as possible.

Prevention of Blood Clots and Pregnancy

If you are pregnant and take the following precautions, it is unlikely that you will develop blood clots or a blood clotting problem:

Avoid alcohol

Avoid caffeine

Avoid taking medications that contain aspirin, warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin-interferon (IFN) or simvastatin

Avoid medications that contain a thrombolytic (blood thinning agent) such as warfarin

Avoid all caffeine and caffeine-like products

Avoid getting regular blood transfusions

Don’t breast feed if you are pregnant or may become pregnant

If you take the following precautions, the risk of developing a blood clot is significantly reduced:

Avoid taking a blood thinner such as warfarin

Avoid alcohol

Avoid smoking

Include the appropriate precautions into your routine antenatal care

Talk to your health care provider about taking these precautions before travel to Mexico
