The body has a unique fat storage complex. This is comprised of adipose tissue, which makes up the majority of our body fat. This fat storage complex is made up of a set of fat-forming molecules known as lipids . Lipids are essentially fat molecules with a negative charge, that are carried in the bloodstream for safe storage. The body also keeps a very high amount of lipids in its fat stores for possible use if necessary.
But there may not be a need to store fat at all. In a small animal study conducted by scientists at the University of Copenhagen, it was found that the levels of excess lipids were significantly decreased in fat-dense mice when compared to mice with a normal amount of fat storage, due to the addition of high carbohydrate diets. And while the fats in a normal diet do not provide much nourishment and can simply build up in the body, a high carbohydrate diet can be used to build up the fat storage complex more slowly; a phenomenon known as gluconeogenesis.
There are other factors involved in fatty acid storage. One of these is the presence of phospholipid and fatty acyl (FA) chains within our lipids which can reduce the amount of fatty acids produced in response to the metabolic rate (also known as the glycerol). As a result of this, the fat-laden lipids in the cell may be stored in the liver to help keep the body in a healthier shape, and they may thus be better able to support healthy lipids storage.
Fat stores are vital for normal development and reproduction, but are also important for fat-burning. A lot of the fat cells in our body are already fat-stable. This means that they will provide the body with a certain proportion of fat for a number of weeks before becoming ‘overfed’, which in turn will leave them more susceptible to fat-burning if they continue their diet in the future. However, the accumulation of extra fat in the body is thought to contribute to increased rates of heart and brain disease as fats accumulate in our arteries to form plaque. The fat in the brain is known to build up fat within the cerebral cortex and, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, may be responsible for one in four Alzheimer’s cases.
