1. Fat is made of three components: triglycerides, which are tiny, water-binding fats, and free fat that is broken down into triglycerides in the skin after it’s eaten or used. These components are fat soluble and absorbable but, by nature, they are found in abundance in a majority of the human body and are distributed throughout every fat cell in the body.
The breakdown of fatty acids into triglycerides, free fat and water-binding triglycerides begins with the stomach.
2. Fats that are the smallest in size, namely, triglycerides, can be found in high levels in the liver and blood. Triglycerides are found in the bloodstream (blood cells) and fatty acid synthesis occurs there. Triglycerides can travel throughout the body as they are metabolized by fat cells.
Triglycerides are small-chain fatty acids – they are very unstable and are most volatile (fluid, not liquid). They also don’t readily dissolve in liquids or solids. Triglycerides are the most plentiful of all the fats in the human body and are a primary source of dietary energy through our daily energy consumption from carbohydrates and dietary fat.
3. Free fatty acids are present in the human body as free fatty acids in the blood stream and through the gastrointestinal tract. They can also be found through the skin.
4. Triglycerides and free fatty acids are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract where they are broken down into glycerol and their derivatives (glycerol-3-phosphate) by the liver – the largest source of body fat. The liver makes glycerol from triglycerides or free fatty acids by using an enzyme called de novo lipogenesis to convert the fat into glycerol and glycerol-3-phosphate.
Most people tend to be metabolically healthy and will not have a problem with their body fat being distributed evenly throughout their body.
Most of the fatty acids stored in the body are free fatty acids (as well as triglycerides), and a third type of fatty acid, palmitic acid, is an important and abundant part of the skin and lipids – but is found predominately in the liver.
