For many years, gambling addiction had to do with the fact it’s a bad habit and you get to keep taking drugs after you stop gaming.
As time passed though, the gaming industry decided it had enough and turned to a new tactic and that was to start treating addiction as a disease and offer “treatment” on the side. With that, we are now seeing the rise of gambling addiction as a medical condition and a diagnosis.
According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the number of people who have been diagnosed with addiction have been growing rapidly for the past several years. From 2010 to 2012, there was a 23 per cent increase in the number of people diagnosed as addicted – a 6.1 per cent increase in the number treated. It seems the majority of these people suffer from “Internet and/or mobile game addiction”.
And this is where it gets interesting:
“We see patients with many different types of gambling-related problems, from gambling addiction to gambling disorder and non-social gambling…the most common treatment is substance dependence treatment. Most patients are treated with opiates, sedatives or psychotherapeutic medication to address addictive behaviors, and in addition psychopharmacology – such as psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and medications such as anti-depressants, anticholinesterase agents, anti-anxiety medications, anti-epileptics and sedatives such as benzodiazepines,” one author of the study, Dr. Thomas F. Tordo, MD, MPH, of Boston Medical Center, told PsyPost, an alternative media site.
This new understanding of the problem is the result of years of research and clinical experience, where the research is showing that as much as 80 per cent of those who are gambling addicts also have a medical problem. It’s also the result of a growing movement by drug companies to try to control the supply/demand of addictive substances.
Tordo’s research is the result of years of research that shows addiction is also a disease and there are lots of alternative treatment options.
“Most of our patients with medical problems like anxiety disorders, pain, diabetes, or depression take medication to help them manage those conditions, and most of our patients also suffer from gambling and gaming addiction. We find that patients in our medical clinic who take drugs for these problems take them because they enjoy their medication,” Tordo told PsyPost.
